The Beat Group - Hi Bird

Beat Group Volume 1 [Studio G - LPSG 1001] (1970)

This is a lovely little Hammond driven groove laden gem from the vaults of Studio G. Most notably (for me anyway) sampled by Depth Charge on Harley Davidson / Ride from the Lust and Lust 2 albums respectively.

September 70’s Reflections of the Life Aquatic

This is the first mix of 2012 and I've chosen to kick the beat mostly to the sidelines in favour of the more dramatic incidental music side of the library music genre.

I've taken on an expansive theme, and with any luck, have done it justice.

Dip In

Intro : Delia Derbyshire – Sea / Ananda Shankar – Sagar (The Ocean) [Inventions For Radio – Dreams – 1964 / Ananda Shankar – 1970]
Armando Sciascia – Black Sand [Sea Fantasy - Vedette - VSM 38553 - 1972]
Brian Bennett – The Sea [Nature Watch - Bruton - BRD 19 - 1982]
The Mystic Moods – Cosmic Sea
Vladmir Cosma - Suspense Aquatique  [Patchwork 3 - Magellan - 526 054 - 1974]
Hiro Yanagida - Fish Sea Milk  [Milk Time – 1970]

  18. Budapest Radio Orchestra – Lights of Hong Kong
  19. Nino Nardini & Roger Roger – Bali Girl
  20. Piero Umiliani - Dove Và Il Mondo
  21. Barbara Moore – Fly Paradise

This mix started life as a bigger project to circumnavigate the globe musically, which was more than likely too large a task. Eventually I got impatient with trying to piece it all together and so started to cull off a number of tracks.

What we have here is the finished article, a 30 minute travelogue and tribute to the novelty of air travel in the 70's.

Fasten your seatbelt and extinguish your cigarette, recline and enjoy your flight on September 70 airlines.

Enjoy.

Roland Kovac - Prairie

Roland Kovac - Rhythm & Strings Vol. 2
Roland Kovac - Rhythm & Strings Vol. 2 (1972)

Roland Kovac - Prairie (Germany, 1972)

There's something compelling about this track. I was listening through one headphone, and since it's mostly stereo seperated the drums and electric piano sounded for a little bit like it was The Mice Parade or some similar Post-Rock ish band.

There are samples to be had from this one I suspect. Lovely break in the middle.

Enjoy

Piero Umiliani - Nel Villaggio

Piero Umiliani - Continente Nero (1975) [Omicron - LPS 0033]
Piero Umiliani - Nel Villaggio (Italy, 1975)

I've been listening to a lot of Piero Umiliani recently, and to be fair, there's a lot to listen to. Piero Umiliani was heavily prolific during the 60's and predominantly the 70's.

I've picked 'Nel Villaggio' not because it has any wonderful breakbeats, because it doesn't even have drums - just subtle percussion. I've picked it because it's just a lovely little gem of a track that, every time I listen to it, I can't shake the feeling that I've heard it somewhere recently.

If anyone knows if this has been sampled or is used on a soundtrack - please let me know.

Otherwise - happy listening.

Vinyl Miners - Taurus Beta

Absolutely fantastic mix by Vinyl Miners on mixcloud. There is no track listing, so for all you enthusiasts of library, early electronica, 60's & 70's obscuriosities and dusty outsider music you can have some fun trying to spot the tracks. I did.

Please give it a listen or visit http://vinylminers.tumblr.com/ for more of the same quality mixing. As with my minor tirade on the DJ Alfonso post, it's nice to be appreciated so please show some support for the people trying to keep this music alive.

Enjoy.

Enter the House of Terror with September 70

Did you ever wonder what was behind the door of that boarded up old house? A hollow shell of brick and timber where the sounds of laughter and life that once filled it’s walls with warmth and hope has now been replaced with the creaks and groans of unrest and despair.
When you pass, for a fleeting second, you think you see a face at the window. But that can’t be, can it? No one has lived there for years. It’s a home in disrepair, unoccupied and alone. It’s a house that has lost it’s very essence, a house that has lost a soul.
This time, for some unknown reason, you decide to try the door. To your surprise it opens easily under your touch. The first thing that hits you upon stepping into the building is the smell. It’s the smell of neglect, and under that is the sweet sickly odour of past decay. Maybe there’s a dead rat behind the walls? Yes, that’s got to be it.
With a growing sense of unease you walk slowly down the hall toward another closed door. A chill runs down your spine, your skin begins to feel prickly with gooseflesh and you can’t shake the sudden sense of foreboding. You’ve seen enough old 70’s horror movies to know that this wasn’t your best idea.  You curse your all so human curiosity and put your fears to one side.
You can hear a hissing and crackling coming from the room ahead.  It sounds very much like the pops of static. After what seems an eternity you reach the door. You push it open tentatively only to see an old record player sitting in the centre of an otherwise empty room. You lift the arm from the runoff and place the needle back at the beginning of the dusty record, sit on the bare floorboards and start to listen…..

The Roger Webb Sound - Heavy Lace

Roger Webb - Moonshade
The Roger Webb Sound - Moonshade (1971)

The Roger Webb Sound - Heavy Lace (UK, 1971)

There's something compelling about Roger Webb, he seemed to have a sound all of his own. I picked this track especially because of it's otherworldly baroque feel, plus it has a nice little break in it.

20. Vespucci - BBC Radiophonic Workshop - Fourth Dimension - BBC

The most recent mix by DJ Alfonso, and if I may be so bold to say,  he never disappoints. It's always a quality and eclectic affair comprising of Library obscuriosities, forgotten soundtracks and general 60's and 70's madness.

There are very few people out there representing this style of music, every once in a while it imposes itself into the substrata of the mainstream only to disappear again.

Please support anyone trying to keep the spirit of library production music alive, and give some of their work a listen, you'll usually find that the collectors are very passionate and put great care and attention into any work they generate.

Bernard Estardy & Alain Poinsot - Implacable Ring (France, 1975)

A great atmospheric track from the late Baron, Bernard Estardy. Over the last few months I've come to love his work over a lot of other French library artists, that's not to say that Pierre Dutour, Jack Arel, Jean-Claude Petit, Paul Piot and a host of other major talents didn't hit it out of the ballpark consistently - but I think just on the basis of 'La Formule du Baron' alone Bernard Estardy deserves to be admired and remembered fondly.

Jack Arel - Something Happen

Jack Arel - Je Fus Cet Enfant La (1972)
Jack Arel - Something Happen (France, 1972)

Another classy track by Jack Arel, and there will probably be a few. I love how this track just simmers away, and never really reaches a boil. Very nice electric piano and slide guitar work.

I'm beginning to become a big fan of the French side of library, but it's so hard to find obscure stuff to put up - especially since Kid Loco has released the 'French Funk Experience'  which is filled with a fine selection of French Library music. Oh well, I'd better just keep on hunting.

Raymond Guiot & Guy Pedersen - Globe Trotting

Raymond Guiot & Guy Pedersen - Musique En Vrac [Telemusic - TM 3017] (1971)

Raymond Guiot & Guy Pedersen - Globe Trotting (France, 1971)

It's quite hard to avoid using the fantastic tracks by library artists due to the fact that most have ended up on a myriad of compilations - especially the absolutely perfect introduction to everything laid back, funky and balls to the wall library that is the 'Blow Up' series.

As far as I'm aware though this funky little gem has never made it to a compilation (that I have anyway), and it's certainly good enough in my humble opinion. Starts with a nice rolling guitar part which gradually builds into a drum pounding and organ grinding classic. Sounds like the sort of track Lemon Jelly might have sampled in their day.
